Easy Homemade Candy Eyes

Store-bought decorative, edible eyes are great in a pinch. However, they are tasteless and so hard you might break a tooth on them. Instead, make my Easy Homemade Candy eyes for all your Halloween treats and snacks. They are only 2 ingredients, white chocolate and mini chocolate chips, and taste 100 percent better! Spooky, edible eyes bring any sandwich, fruit, or dessert to life!

Tips and Tricks for Making Easy Homemade Candy Eyes

  • White Chocolate: There are a few options here. The easiest one to use is a quick setting product such as white Candy Melts (can find these in craft stores too) or Vanilla Flavored Melted Wafers (I get these at the regular grocery store in the baking aisle). These are actually not chocolate, but they are easy to melt, use, and they set quickly at room temperature. You can also use bars of white chocolate or white chocolate chips. Chocolate chips contain stabilizers which make them hard to melt. If your melted chocolate isn’t getting smooth, add 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil to get it to the right temperature.
  • Chocolate chips: I like to use regular mini chocolate chips for the center of the eyes. However, you can also use melted chocolate and dot/pipe it into the center of the white dot.
  • Allergy friendly: You can make these safe for nut allergies and dairy-free by ensuring you are using products that denote those things on the package. Enjoy Life Foods makes chocolate that is dairy and nut free.
  • Sugar Free? There are brands such as Lily’s and Whole Foods that make sugar-free chocolate and chocolate chips that you could use in this recipe. I haven’t tried melting them, so I’m not exactly sure how they perform (whether or not you’ll need to add coconut oil to make then chocolate easier to work with).

Homemade Candy Eyes

2 ingredient, delicious, and fun edible eyes to use on all you Halloween treats and snacks.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2-4 oz white candy melts, white chocolate, or white chocolate chips amount depends on how many eyes you want to make
  • about 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Melt the candy melts/white chocolate chips until smooth. If it seems too thick or won't stir easily, stir in a 1/2 tsp of coconut oil.
  • Place a piece of parchment paper on a large plate or small sheet pan. Make small dot of the melted white chocolate on the parchment paper. You can use a small spoon or I find it easier to use a piping bag/plastic sandwich bag with the corner cut to make the dots. You can make different sizes or all the same size.
  • If the white chocolate is too runny, making a mess, and not forming small dots well, that means the chocolate is too hot. Wait for a few minutes then try again. Your chocolate can also get too cold and stuck in the bag or on the spoon. You can rewarm the chocolate in the microwave for a few seconds if that happens.
  • Place a mini chocolate chip with the point down into the center of the white dot. Candy melts/melting chocolate will set up quickly so only do 5 or 6 dots before placing the mini chocolate chips on top. With regular chocolate, you'll have more time before the white chocolate sets.
  • Once you've made as many eyes as you'd like, allow them to set either at room temperature or in the fridge to harden faster.
  • Once set, peel the eyes off of the parchment paper and store in an airtight container in the freezer, refrigerator, or at room temperature (if the room temp isn't too warm) for 2 months.
  • Use eyes on cookies, treats, sandwiches, fruit, and more! If you need to stick the eyes to any food, you can use more melted white chocolate as the "glue".
